Understanding the system

Research the education experience, not only the qualification.

A good decision considers what you will learn, how you will be assessed, where you will live and how the programme connects with your longer-term professional goals.

Choose the right type of provider

Understand the different roles of universities, polytechnics, wānanga and private training establishments.

Compare programmes carefully

Look beyond a course title to entry requirements, content, assessment, accreditation, costs and possible occupations.

Prepare for New Zealand study

Learn about independent study, academic integrity, group work, classroom communication and asking for help.

Choose a place that suits you

Compare regions, climate, transport, housing and community life alongside the programme itself.

Before you commit

Six checks that make education research more useful.

Use these checks to build a practical shortlist and discuss the decision clearly with your family.

01

Programme fit

Does the subject build logically on your education, experience, interests and professional goals?

02

Entry requirements

Check academic entry, English-language evidence, prerequisite subjects and application documents directly with the provider.

03

Learning and assessment

Understand the mix of lectures, independent study, group work, examinations, placements and practical projects.

04

Professional requirements

For regulated professions, check registration, accreditation, placement and competence requirements with the responsible authority.

05

Full cost and location

Plan for tuition, materials, insurance, housing, transport and daily life—not tuition fees alone.

06

Life after study

Research realistic occupations and employer expectations without assuming that a qualification guarantees work or an immigration outcome.

Cost planning

Build a budget for the place where you will actually live.

Use this planning tool to test a weekly living budget. The example amounts are editable and are not a quote, a fee estimate or confirmation that you meet any visa requirement.

Planning estimate for 52 weeks$27,780$515 per week, plus $1,000 for setup and contingency
What the example uses

Study with New Zealand currently publishes examples including accommodation from $140 to $484 a week, basic groceries from $80 to $120 a week and public transport up to $37 a week. We use editable mid-range examples rather than presenting one figure as suitable for everyone.

Remember to add separately

Tuition, compulsory course costs, insurance, flights, visa-related costs, rental bond, clothing, medical needs and family expenses are not automatically included in the calculator.

Common questions

Clear answers for early research.

How should I choose a New Zealand education provider?

Start with the qualification and your intended field, then compare programme content, assessment, professional recognition, entry requirements, cost, student support and location. Verify the provider and programme through NZQA or the relevant official authority.

Does a New Zealand qualification guarantee a job?

No. Employers consider the role, your capability, communication, experience, practical evidence and fit with the workplace. Begin career preparation during study rather than waiting until graduation.

Can Kiwi Fern give immigration advice?

Yes. General education information and career preparation are available through this website, while personalised immigration advice is provided by Kiwi Fern's licensed immigration advisers.

Keep information current.

Education, professional registration and immigration settings can change. Check time-sensitive information with the relevant New Zealand authority. Personalised immigration advice must come from a licensed adviser or another legally exempt person.
